What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is the only approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines in adults.
What is BOTOX?

The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Botox is also used to help excessive sweating of the hands and armpit areas. Studies indicate it may also be helpful with migraines, neck spasms, and masseter muscle hypertrophy.

How long does the procedure take?

The actual procedure takes less than 15 minutes. With the use of cold compresses, the procedure is very well-tolerated. You should be able to go back to work or routine activity right after the procedure.

How does Botox work?

Botox is injected into a targeted facial expression muscle, blocking impulses from the nerve to the muscle, thereby relaxing the muscle so it does not contract. This causes the overlying skin to become smoother, with fewer lines and wrinkles. After treatment, the skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression and feeling to be unaffected.

How quickly will I see results?

Botox usually starts relaxing the treated area within several days, but the full effect may not be realized for two weeks.

How long will Botox last?

The effects last between 3-6 months on average but everyone is different.

What are potential complications?

There can be some bruising at the site of the injection. This is rare and should go away naturally in a few days. Much more rare is the potential for asymmetry in the brow. Since Botox has a self-limiting mode of action, this should resolve naturally as well.
